Story of Courage: Kim Shirley Tackett’s Rectal Cancer Journey

Our Stories of Courage series began during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but courage is not confined to one diagnosis or one ribbon.
Today, Ladies In The Outdoors and Dolls and Does Collective honors Kim Shirley Tackett, who is facing Stage 3 rectal cancer with faith, determination and the spirit that has guided her throughout her life.
At 60 years old, Kim is a wife, Christian, bowhunter, sporting clays competitor and outdoorswoman. She has always believed that when something is difficult, you square your shoulders and get after it.
Then cancer placed a target before her that she never asked to face.
Facing Cancer With Faith
On September 14, Kim began a six week course of treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Her journey has included tears, fear and days that feel overwhelming. Through those moments, her faith continues to carry her.
“I’m not doing this because I’m strong. I’m doing this because my God is.”
For Kim, trusting God does not mean every day is easy. It means having someone to lean on when the weight of what she is facing feels too heavy.
Regroup, Reset and Call “PULL” Again
More than 25 years of hunting and competing have taught Kim that sometimes you miss. You regroup, reset your feet, take a breath and call “PULL” again.
That familiar lesson has taken on a different meaning as she faces cancer. There are difficult days, but Kim continues to get back up and face what comes next.
Cancer is part of her story, but it does not get to decide who she is. She remains a woman who loves fiercely, laughs, talks about hunting and sporting clays, and praises God.
The things that make Kim herself still matter. Her faith, her love for the outdoors and her determination remain part of the life she continues to live through treatment.
