My name is Sara Perez, and I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’m a proud mom of two amazing boys, a school teacher, and someone who loves the outdoors, especially hunting. I try to live life to the fullest, and having my boys by my side is a true blessing. Together, we hunt, fish, hike, and love to be in God’s country. I’m so thankful to have been raised with these traditions and enjoy passing them down to my kids.
Having family at hunt camp growing up created some of the best memories! As I got older, my brother Jerome and I continued hunting together while teaching our own kids to share our passion for the outdoors. We started with rifle hunting, transitioned to muzzleloader, and four years ago, we became archery hunters. The antelope harvest in my photo was one of my most challenging yet favorite hunts, and it gave real meaning to fair chase.
This was the first time I drew an antelope tag since I was a kid, and I knew I had to practice shooting my bow at long distances. I worked hard and eventually reached my goal of pulling back 60 pounds and shooting accurately out to 75/80 yards. I decided 75 yards would be my maximum distance, and I felt ready!
A few days into the hunt, I found myself among some junipers, trying to get in on this buck. I first ranged him at 110 yards and knew I had to close the distance. Twice, I had a possible shot, drawing back my bow, but he moved before I could release. I could tell he was getting nervous, and I knew if I didn’t take a shot soon, he would be gone.
Finally, I ranged him at 75 yards, drew back, and after one step, he was broadside. The rest is history! I was so blessed to harvest my first antelope with a bow!
After this hunt and two other archery harvests, I am absolutely hooked on bow hunting! I love shooting my bow, being in God’s country with my family, and providing food for our table. Looking ahead, my dream is to hear a big bull coming in screaming, but I know I’ll be blessed with any opportunity to spend time in the mountains.
I’m so thankful for everyone who has been part of my hunting journey—whether by helping with archery, teaching me something new, spending time with me in the great outdoors, or encouraging me along the way. Up next, my boys have a cow elk hunt for Christmas, I have a January deer hunt, and a Texas aoudad hunt in March. I can’t wait!
Thank you, Ladies in the Outdoors, for this opportunity to share my story!
