Story of Courage: Danielle Poteet | Breast Cancer Survivor Story

At 40 years old, Danielle Poteet noticed slight nipple drainage and pain in her breast. Her mammogram just six months earlier had been clear. The first treatments and tests did not reveal cancer, but her symptoms continued.
Danielle knew something was not right. She kept seeking answers.
Her breast cancer journey became a story of faith, courage and the importance of being heard.
Trusting Her Body and Seeking Answers
Danielle’s provider listened to her concerns and ordered further testing. Rather than dismissing the symptoms, her provider continued looking for an explanation.
A biopsy revealed Paget disease of the nipple. Danielle then received a diagnosis of grade 3 triple-negative breast cancer.
Only months after a clear mammogram, she was facing news that changed her life.
Facing Cancer With Five Children at Home
With five children still at home, Danielle was devastated by the diagnosis.
She leaned on prayer, her faith and the people who loved her. Even while facing uncertainty, she chose to keep moving forward.
Her courage did not mean the experience was easy. It meant continuing through the fear, one step at a time.
Surgery and Seven Years Cancer-Free
Danielle underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction. Following extensive surgery, she received clear results. She shared that she did not require chemotherapy or radiation.
Today, Danielle is seven years cancer-free.
That milestone is a meaningful part of her story, alongside the determination that helped her seek answers when her symptoms persisted.
Sharing Her Story With Other Women
Danielle’s experience shows how much it can matter to speak up about changes in your body and have a provider who listens.
Her symptoms continued despite a recent clear mammogram and initial tests that did not reveal cancer. By continuing to seek answers, she helped bring her diagnosis to light.
Now, sharing her story offers encouragement to another woman who may be feeling frightened or alone.
