Megan Hughes shares how family, everyday comforts and choosing joy helped her through breast cancer treatment.

Choosing Joy, Every Day

Through every medical challenge she has faced, Megan Hughes has learned a lesson that shapes how she approaches each day: choose joy.

During months of uncertainty, exhausting treatments and recovery, she has made an effort to notice the small things that bring her comfort. A cup of coffee. Flowers in her garden. Time with the people and animals she loves.

Those moments have mattered, especially on the hardest days.

Facing the Diagnosis

On February 20, Megan felt a small lump in her breast. With a significant family history of cancer, she immediately feared that the day she had always worried about had arrived.

One month later, she received the call confirming breast cancer. It had already spread to a lymph node.

Tests, appointments and information came quickly. Another month later, Megan began chemotherapy.

The first two months were mentally overwhelming. She was processing the diagnosis while trying to understand what came next. The 4½ months of chemotherapy that followed left her physically exhausted.

Throughout it all, Megan leaned heavily on her family and the support system surrounding her. She also began looking for moments of joy wherever she could find them.

Joy in the Everyday

After a week of nausea, being able to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee brought joy.

So did seeing flowers bloom in her garden and settling in for sweet snuggles with her dogs.

A drive through the mountains with the man she loves became another bright spot, even when she had not felt well enough to leave home.

These were simple moments, but they gave her something to appreciate during a difficult time. Treatment demanded so much of her energy. Finding joy helped her stay connected to the parts of life she loved.

The News She Had Hoped For

Megan recently underwent breast and lymph node surgery. While recovering in her compression wrap, she received wonderful news.

She had experienced a complete response to chemotherapy, and her surgical pathology showed no carcinoma.

After months of treatment and uncertainty, Megan had a reason to celebrate.

Now that is joy.

Appreciating Today

Megan still has radiation, appointments and years of hormone therapy ahead. Her treatment continues, but she is determined to appreciate today’s blessings as she takes the next steps.

Her dogs are happily playing in a peaceful yard. A beautiful sunset is filling the sky.

And Megan is celebrating the news that she is cancer free.

There are challenges ahead, but there is also much to be thankful for right now.

Honoring Megan’s Hughes Courage

Ladies In The Outdoors & Dolls and Does Collective honor Megan Hughes for sharing her story and the everyday moments that helped her through treatment.

Her experience offers a heartfelt reminder that a difficult day can still hold something beautiful. Joy might be found in the garden, along a mountain road or in a quiet moment beside a beloved pet.

Megan’s story leaves room for both the pain of what she has endured and the happiness she feels today. Through it all, she continues to choose joy, one day at a time.

NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE.
